Shopify Local Inventory

Local Inventory syncs available quantities from selected Shopify locations into Google Cloud, so AI Commerce Search can show shoppers what is available for pickup at their local store.

What It Does

When Local Inventory is enabled:

  • Each selected Shopify location becomes a place in the Google Cloud Retail API
  • Product variants with available quantity at a selected location receive pickup availability for that place
  • Search and collection results can reflect the shopper's active local store, using the place-aware filter in the Search and Product Grid App Blocks
  • Inventory changes at selected locations flow through near real-time sync, and every full catalog import refreshes each selected location

Enable Local Inventory

  1. Open Advanced Settings in the Retail Cloud Connect Shopify App.
  2. Turn on the setting in the Local Inventory card.
  3. Select the Shopify locations that should sync inventory.
  4. Optionally set a display name for each location. Until a name is saved, the storefront shows the generic Local Store label; setting a display name does not rename the location in Shopify.

The app reads Shopify inventory levels and locations to power this feature. Stores that installed the app before Local Inventory launched may be asked to approve updated app permissions before the setting can be enabled.

Selecting and Removing Locations

Only selected locations sync to Google Cloud. When a merchant deselects a location or disables Local Inventory, Retail Cloud Connect automatically clears the pickup availability it previously wrote for that location on the next sync. Locations that were never managed through Retail Cloud Connect are never modified.

Storefront Experience

With Local Inventory enabled, the Search and Product Grid App Blocks can filter results by availability at the shopper's active store. The filter shows a Local Store heading with the saved display name and a Change Store action for choosing a different store. Changing store keeps the shopper's current selections until a new store is set.

  • Local Store, Change Store, Pick up in store, and related copy can be localized on the Translations page
  • Headless and bespoke storefronts can set or change the active place with window.Nimstrata.placeId and window.Nimstrata.setPlaceId - see Local Inventory Place

When Changes Take Effect

Deselecting a location or disabling Local Inventory triggers a dedicated cleanup sync, so stale pickup availability is removed without waiting for the next scheduled import. Newly selected locations populate on the next import; allow a full sync cycle for every product to reflect them.
