With 10,000+ product variants, Geardoor needed search that could keep up with their catalog - without hiring an engineering team.
When Hameed Al Beiruty co-founded Geardoor, the vision was simple: build the UAE's go-to outdoor marketplace, run by adventurers who actually use the gear they sell. The catalog grew fast - hiking boots, climbing harnesses, rooftop tents, cycling kits - spanning thousands of products with complex attributes like size, waterproof rating, and material type.
But as the catalog scaled past 10,000 variants, Shopify's default search started falling behind. A customer searching for "waterproof hiking boots size 10 wide" would get irrelevant results or miss products entirely. Filtering was inconsistent between search results and collection pages. For a small team handling everything from customer service to logistics, building a custom search solution wasn't an option.

Geardoor layered Google's Vertex AI Search on top of Shopify - no code, no engineers, no migration.
Through Retail Cloud Connect, Geardoor plugged directly into Google Cloud's Vertex AI Search for Commerce - the same AI that powers product discovery for some of the world's largest retailers. The implementation replaced Shopify's default search and collection filtering without touching Geardoor's existing theme or workflow.
Three capabilities made the biggest difference:
Natural language search understanding - Vertex AI interprets complex, multi-attribute queries ("lightweight two-person tent under 500 AED") and returns relevant results instead of keyword matches.
Unified filtering across search and collections - Customers get the same intuitive filtering experience whether they're browsing a collection page or searching. Filters dynamically update based on available products, eliminating dead ends.
Variant-level precision - Instead of surfacing a generic product page and making customers dig for the right size or color, the system surfaces the exact variant that matches the query.
The entire setup was managed through Nimstrata's Shopify app - no custom development, no API integration project, no dedicated engineer required. Hameed's team had Google-grade search running in their store without writing a single line of code.

23.86% add-to-cart rate per search visit - customers searching the site are finding what they need and adding it to cart at a rate that reflects genuinely relevant results.
